A multi-trunked deciduous tree or shrub in the rose family with dense, fine-textured branching. It can be used as a shade tree, street tree, or shrub in a border or hedge. To use as a tree, it must be pruned or it will grow like a shrub. Allegheny Serviceberry is a relatively short-lived tree.
It differs from other varieties with its hairless foliage, purple-tinged new growth and tastier berries. | Native Americans dried the pomes like raisins and mashed them in cakes with meat and fat to make a high energy food for long winter travel.
