Heart-leaved zizia produces clusters of yellow flowers known as "umbels". The clusters are flat topped with each flower stem being of equal length. Individual flowers are tiny but provide nectar to a number of different pollinators. It has unique, heart-shaped basal leaves that give it its common name. It stays in relatively neat clumps or will grow as individual plants.
Heart-leaved zizia and other beneficial members of the carrot family can easily be confused with the similar-looking wild parsnip, which is highly invasive and can cause intense dematitis if touched.
