About This Plant

Downy, purple cushion-like flowers attract a number of insects and serve as an important source of nectar, particularly for late-season butterflies. It is also a host plant for moth species. The plant is late to emerge in the spring, but then it spreads rapidly via seed and rhizomes, forming colonies that could overwhelm small landscapes. It's great for butterfly gardens.
