Watershield is an emergent aquatic plant with small lily pad-like leaves that float on the water’s surface. A long single root attaches it to the bottom, and its submerged parts are coated in a jelly-like substance that prevents it from drying out. It can become weedy and emits a chemical that can deter growth of other nearby aquatic plants.
This plant’s leaves are known to be eaten in salad or used as thickener in soups. | Watershield provides a food source for ducks and habitat for fish and aquatic invertebrates.
