Watershield is an emergent aquatic plant with small lily pad-like leaves that float on the water’s surface. A long single root attaches it to the bottom, and its submerged parts are coated in jelly-like substance that prevents it from drying out. It can become weedy and emits chemical that can deter growth of other nearby aquatic plants.
This plants leaves are known to be eaten in salad or used as thickener in soups.| Watershield provides a food source for ducks and habitat for fish and aquatic invertabrates.
