Another great plant for sunny rain gardens or riparian areas, turtleheads like moist soils and full sun. Sometimes its white flowers may be tinged with pink. It spreads slowly via rhizomes, attracts hummingbirds, and is a larval host plant for the Baltimore Checkerspot butterfly.
The genus name “Chelone” means “tortoise” in Greek. It was the name of a nymph who refused to attend Zeus’s wedding and was turned into a tortoise as punishment.
