A woody, deciduous, showy, understory tree usually growing under larger forest trees and at woodland edges. Its bark shifts from scaly to finely blocky as it matures. Flowering Dogwood's horizontal-tiered branching, red fruits and scarlet-red fall foliage are sure to offer year-round interest in the landscape and wildlife benefit.
Native Americans used this tree for medicinal purposes and extracted a red dye from the roots. | Its hard wood is used to make items such as spools, jeweler’s blocks, and tool handles.
