American Bur-reed is an emergent, grass-like, aquatic perennial. Large ball-shaped flower clusters with tiny green flowers bloom in the summer, and turn brown and bur-like later. It occurs naturally in shallow water along muddy shores, swamps, and pond margins.
American Bur-reed produces a seed-like fruit that grows within female flower clusters. The seeds are a food source for waterfowl, marsh birds, muskrats and more.
