Clay Soil

Return to Glossary

« Back to Glossary Index

This soil feels smooth and sticky when wet. It holds water very well, but it can become compacted and drain poorly, which can lead to root rot if plants are overwatered. Clay soil tends to be nutrient-rich, but it might be best to loosen it up by adding organic matter to improve drainage if you wish to have a greater diversity of plants.
