About This Plant

A frequently cultivated tree or shrub in the US, American Hazelnut is a suckering tree in the birch family. It's well known for its edible nuts that are similar to the commonly eaten European filbert. In the wild, it grows in rocky woodlands, hillsides, pastures and thickets. It is fast growing with hairy stems and gray-brown bark in maturity. Nuts are typically produced on trees that are 2-3 years old, and mature in the fall. For best nut production, it is best to plant multiple trees and grow in full sun.
