As the name suggests, this fern is an evergreen perennial that produces a large group, or crown, of foliage and will not spread beyond that. Songbirds use parts of the plant for nest construction.
The species name, marginalis, and the use of “Marginal” in some of its common names, refers to the location of the sori, or spore producing structures, on the outer edges of the underside of this fern’s leaves.
