A good plant for rain gardens, great blue lobelia likes moist soil and can tolerate shade. Individual plants are short-lived and can behave like a biennial, but it self seeds readily and can form small colonies for a lovely mass of blue. Flowers open from the bottom of the stem up.
Lobelias, like this one and Cardinal flower, produce a secondary compound known as lobeline which deters herbivores and provides the plant’s poisonous traits.
