Gorgeous fall color highlights the unique leaves on this aromatic tree. Break a leaf off or scratch the bark for a spicy scent. Sassafras is dioecious with separate male/female trees. Female trees will produce blue drupes that dangle off a red stem. It is hard to transplant because of its big taproot, and it will sucker and form colonies.
This tree can have four different shaped leaves on the same tree! Look for ovate (single-lobed) leaves, trident-shaped leaves (three lobes), or “mitten” shaped leaves (two-lobed) that can be a “lefty” or a “righty.”
Alternate Names
Common Sassafras, White Sassagras, Mitten Tree, Cinnamon Wood
