Well known for its exfoliating yellow and brown bark, River Birch is a moisture loving but adaptable member of the birch family. As the name suggests, it is often found growing along river and stream banks and in floodplains. It is both heat and wind tolerant, needs little pruning, and provides ornamental interest to a landscape.
River Birch wood is used for furniture, fuel, basket hoops, and more due to its hard, close-grained quality. | Because the tree sheds smaller twigs and branches easily, it should not be planted next to a house as it has a tendency to clog gutters.
