Used as an ornamental tree for its rounded crown, low branches and vibrant red fall foliage, red oak is a "Keystone Plant" with extremely high wildlife value, although it takes at least 20 years to produce acorns. Leaves have 7-11 bristle-tipped lobes.
Male flowers are yellow-green catkins, while female flowers are smaller and oval-shaped. Both are produced on the same tree. Acorns take two years to develop.
