Inkberry is a woody, evergreen shrub that requires both male and female plants to produce its namesake berries. It spreads through suckers and works well planted as a hedge or privacy screen. It also makes a great addtion to a pollinator garden, as its greenish-white flowers attract bees and butterflies. It does best in full sun and moist soils.
Though the fruits are considered edible to humans, caution should be used in the consumption of inkberry fruits as it is also known to cause unpleasant gastrointestinal symptoms due to the presence of saponins
