Also known as Carolina allspice, this deciduous shrub has glossy, leathery, aromatic, dark green leaves. Fragrant, dark maroon, funky-looking flowers grace this plant, which is very resistant to disease and insect problems. It can grow in a variety of soil conditions but prefers soils that are nutrient rich and well-draining. It does not tolerate drought, or exceptionally sandy soils. It will sucker but is slow growing. All parts of the plant may be dried for use in potpourri.
