About This Plant

Pussy Willows are dioecious, woody shrubs that produce flowers known as catkins. The male plant produces silky, pearl gray catkins that provide interest in late winter to early spring. The catkins open upon blooming to reveal bright yellow stamens. The Pussy Willow gets its name from these catkins that are said to resemble the pads on a cat's paw. Female plants also produce catkins but they are significantly less showy than males'. Pussy Willows prefer somewhat moist but well draining soils and do well in part to full sun.
