Coontail is a submerged or floating aquatic plant with stems that can reach 10 feet long! They have dark green leaves produced in whorls which give it its raccoon-tail-like appearance. It produces tiny flowers with greenish-brown petals and can be found in a variety of aquatic, freshwater environments.
Coontail has been purposely introduced into polluted bodies of water in bioremediation projects due to its ability to absorb suspended particles of some heavy metals and other chemicals.
