A member of the Carrot family, zizia is not browsed by deer and gets yellow umbel flowers that pollinators love. Short-tongued bees favor it, and it is a host plant for several butterflies. It's easy to grow, and while individual plants are short-lived, the plants self-seed and can persist.
Be careful not to confuse Golden Alexanders with the similar-looking, highly invasive Pastinaca sativa (Wild Parsnip) Wild Parsnip is taller, blooms later, and can cause skin burns if touched.
