Ostrich fern is known as an easy-to-grow fern that prefers swampy and moist areas in forest understories. Native to both North America and Eurasia, this fern is adaptable and while it prefers full or partial shade, it can also tolerate sun and some less than ideal soils. When the fern emerges in the spring, before unraveling, its swirled "fiddleheads" are commonly harvested and used culinarily.
